Best Time to Visit the French Riviera

The best time to visit the French Riviera — a season-by-season guide to weather, crowds, events and when to go.

The French Riviera rewards a visit in any season — the question is what you want from it. Weather, crowds, prices and events shift through the year, so the best time depends on your priorities. Here is a season-by-season guide to when to visit.

Spring (April–June)

Spring is many people's favourite: mild, bright weather, gardens in bloom and the sea warming, without the peak-summer crowds until June. It is also the great season of events — the Monaco Grand Prix and the Cannes Film Festival both fall in May.

For sightseeing, villages and comfortable days, late spring is hard to beat.

  • Mild, bright weather and blooms
  • Fewer crowds until June
  • Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes festival in May
  • Ideal for sightseeing and villages

Summer (July–August)

Summer is the Riviera of postcards — hot, buzzing, and all about the beaches, beach clubs and warm sea. It is also the busiest and priciest time, with festivals, fireworks and packed roads, especially around Saint-Tropez.

It is the season for sun and glamour, if you do not mind the crowds and the heat.

  • Hot weather and warm sea
  • Beaches, beach clubs and nightlife
  • Fireworks and summer festivals
  • The busiest and most expensive season

Autumn (September–October)

Autumn is a quiet delight: the sea still warm from summer, the crowds thinning, and a calmer, golden light over the coast. September brings the yacht shows and, later, Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, with pleasant days for touring.

For warm-sea swimming without the peak crush, early autumn is ideal.

  • Warm sea, thinning crowds
  • Yacht shows and Les Voiles in September
  • Golden light and calm days
  • Great for touring and swimming

Winter (November–March)

Winter is the Riviera's secret season — mild and often bright, quiet and good value, with the villages to yourself. February brings the Nice Carnival and the Menton Lemon Festival, and the ski slopes of the Alps are close enough for a day trip.

For calm, culture and festivals without the crowds, winter has its own appeal.

  • Mild, quiet and good value
  • Nice Carnival and Menton festival in February
  • Villages without the crowds
  • Ski slopes within reach

So when should you go?

For the best all-round balance of weather and calm, aim for May–June or September. For beaches and glamour, come in summer. For value and quiet, choose winter. Whatever the season, a private chauffeur makes the most of the days, whatever the weather.

There is no wrong time — only the season that suits your trip.
